When the funding bodies stopped providing public money for student accommodation, it was inevitable that the private sector, either on its own or through the disastrous public-private partnerships, took on some of the job, the risks, and as night follows say, the huge pay packets. I have also been amazed at the eye-watering loans to build new student accommodation approved by by some HEI governing bodies which clearly have been misled by a rose- tinted risk assessment. Hopefully all will get back to normal, but the demand for accommodation will surely fall.
