One of the United States' highest scientific honours, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Engineering, has been awarded to a Southampton University professor. David Payne and Emmanuel Desurvire of the French company Alcatel Alsthom won medals for their joint invention of the erbium-doped fibre amplifier, which enables long distance cables to carry signals at unprecedented rates.
