DOUBLE STANDARDS Hurting innocent, helpless animals is abominable. Terrorizing researchers and their families is abominable. But although the transparency, standards, regulation and answerability of biomedical research are nowhere near humane enough to protect lab animals from suffering, the animals bred, brutalized and butchered daily in grotesque numbers by the meat, poultry, dairy and fur industries have next to no protection at all from their agony -- and, unlike with biomedical research, there is not even the pretext that those abominations are necessary for human health or survival (but rather the contrary).
