As a mom of three kids and a foreign female faculty member at a Japanese national university, I found that the understanding and support of colleagues is the most crucial issue. But you have to raise your voice and ask for help. Otherwise, as typical in Japan, everyone expects you won't destroy the harmony and handle it yourself.
