Science writer Philip Ball has won the Aventis science books general prize with his book Critical Mass: How One Thing Leads to Another . Lord May of Oxford, the president of the Royal Society, and Dirk Oldenburg, chairman of the board of management of the Aventis Foundation, presented the £10,000 prize to Mr Ball at a ceremony in London last week.
