Welshman appointed South Bank v-c

Deian Hopkin, vice-provost at London Guildhall University, is to be vice-chancellor of South Bank University from September. Professor Hopkin, 56, is a history graduate from the University of Aberystwyth, where he taught for 24 years. For most of that time he was also a tutor for the Open University.

Current vice-chancellor Gerry Bernbaum said: "Deian has a first-rate academic background and his strong entrepreneurial skills, experience of regeneration and widening participation make him ideally suited to South Bank."
