More than 60 per cent of those in strategic leadership positions, such as pro or deputy vice-chancellor, registrar and chief operating officer, earn upwards of £100,000.

Just 22 per cent of senior managers, including those heading a department, earn at least £100,000; 67 per cent earn £60,001-£100,000.

The data, published on 6 August, reveal that most lecturers earn between £20,001 and £60,000.

Almost all (99 per cent) senior or principal lecturers earn upwards of £40,000.
