Industrial expenditure on R&D in 1994 increased by 5 per cent to Pounds 9.5 billion in cash terms compared to 1993, according to figures published this week by the Central Statistical Office. Last year R&D expenditure by the civilian business sector, which covers industries such as chemicals, services and engineering, rose by 4 per cent over 1993 to Pounds 8 billion. Defence firms notched up an increase in R&D spend of 12 per cent to Pounds 1.5 billion.
