Princess Anne has formally named a new £40 million royal research ship.

The RRS James Cook is the latest addition to the Natural Environment Research Council's fleet of oceanographic research ships and has been described as the most advanced multipurpose research ship in the world.

The new ship has been designed to carry scientists to the most challenging environments, including tropical oceans and ice sheets.
