Margaret Beckett, president of the Board of Trade, started her speech to Save British Science's annual general meeting by explaining why she was addressing them. "This is an invitation I felt not able to refuse," she said. Her brother-in-law is a member of the pressure group, so she may have decided that the oration was a way of ensuring a quiet Christmas lunch.
