In the academic year 1993-94, there were 43,800 postgraduate award holders in the UK, 22 per cent of the postgraduate population. In England 9,267 postgraduate students received support from access funds, averaging Pounds 463 per person. The figures were given in response to a parliamentary question from Ted Rowlands, Labour MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney.
