A short story competition in honour of Booker prize-winner Pat Barker has been announced at New College Durham. The Pat Barker prize is designed to discover a new generation of writers from the northeast. After receiving the Booker prize she said: "To some extent people in the north feel this is our prize." The closing date for entries of under 3,000 words, is March 31 1996 and the winners will be announced in Adult Learners' Week on May 14.
