'Modern' universities flex v-c muscle

NEW universities have launched a pressure group inside the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals to ensure their voices are heard in the post-Dearing era. The Coalition of Modern Universities, which includes 26 of the institutions incorporated in 1992, feels the interests of new universities have not been properly recognised. With greater emphasis now on the flexibility, wider participation and importance of vocational skills which they have always promoted, they feel their time has come.
