The Association of European Universities (known as the CRE) is considering a merger with the Confederation of Rectors Conferences of European Union States. The CRE, whose chairman is Leicester University vice-chancellor Kenneth Edwards, has 500 member universities in 40 countries. The confederation comprises 20 higher education representative bodies.
