The average salary for a full-time lecturer working in a new university or adult education centre was Pounds 29,0 in March 1998, according to the Department for Education and Employment. Some 26,670 people worked in this sector, 57 per cent of whom were aged more than 40 years. Two-thirds of the full-time lecturers were male.
