The British Council employs more than 1,500 professional teachers of English at 1 teaching centres in 54 countries, teaching 1.1 million class hours in 1997-98, its annual report reveals this week. The council also supported 9,000 scientific visits and more than 1,300 research links between the United Kingdom and overseas.
