More students from Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian backgrounds started degree courses in 1997-1998, according to Higher Education Statistics Agency figures. Ethnic minorities accounted for 14 per cent of the total home domiciled first year undergraduates of known ethnicity, up from 13 per cent in 1996-1997.
