I think you forgot to mention "do some great original research". Networking will only get you so far.
In addition to "do some great original research", in the Build Your Portfolio category, it might be a good idea to to understand the utility of ORCID (orcid.org). ORCID is a DOI for a person, a lifelong digital signature that supports 37 different worktypes. So integrating ORCID into your workflow means you'll get credit for the totality of your portfolio, and it will be all in one place. Academia.edu and ResearchGate are "seriously sub-optimal" (J. Ciracella/CUNY) in comparison to ORCID. 2.3M people worldwide have registered, because it is open source. Both the article and the comments all look intimidating and almost unattainable. But I refuse to be intimidated and have also resolved to work harder and get around this in time to hit my academic goal post(s). Thanks for an insightful piece.
