I’m being docked pay for boycotting marking – but I teach for free!

I’m externally funded to do research but I help colleagues by teaching on top. How can it be right to punish me for partial performance, asks Philip Moriarty

I wonder whether it would be worth contacting UKRI/EPSRC to let them know of this. It could be construed as the University misusing public funds by taking money intended for Prof Moriaty's salary and keeping it for themselves. It is very short-sighted of institutions to behave this way. Before I retired, I too used to do some teaching, for no pay, while being funded to do full-time research. If this had happened to me, I would have no goodwill left toward the institution and would never have done any teaching again.
Thank you for your comment, @deevybee. I have indeed told the HoS and Director of Teaching that I will not teach for the remainder of the fellowship. You're absolutely correct -- my stock of goodwill towards the University (as distinct from the School) has definitely been exhausted. There's also this message from UKRi to universities, sent earlier today: Re: Industrial Action and UKRI Grant Terms and Conditions We have received a number of queries on the industrial action currently taking place and how it relates to our grant terms and conditions for UKRI funded fellowships. We are therefore writing to confirm our position. As per UKRI grant terms and conditions, funds can only be used for the cost of activities that meet the agreed aims and objectives of the project/fellowship. UKRI funds cannot be used to support time researchers spend taking part in any industrial action. For fellows that are fully funded by UKRI, particularly where the individual is fully funded from directly incurred costs, we would expect any reductions in salary to reflect our terms and conditions which relate to how much time the individual can spend on activity not related to the grant. Any unspent funds will be dealt with at reconciliation as per the terms and conditions of the grant. We hope this clarification is helpful.
What do you think about the response by UKRI?
This is a totally wrong position for the University of Nottingham to take and it's totally correct to call out their position on this. In general, UCEA are taking a dreadful position on this dispute - showing they have totally lost the moral high ground. Your position is clear - it is not the university's money that's being withheld from yourself - they do not have the right to it and they need to account for their actions. Sounds exactly like my position, except the external research funding has dried up.
